A 68-year-old retired teacher takes part in Las Vegas Marathon

Jan Barnes of Garland Close, Chichester will be taking part in a Las Vegas marathon known as the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon to raise money in memory of her family dog Truffle for the charity Canine Partners.

The charity trains dogs to assist people with disabilities and teaches dogs to provides practical day-to-day assistance with tasks that may be difficult or painful to perform.

Jan will be competing with more than 30,000 other participants on 16 November. So far she has raised £140 of her £500 target.

Chichester support shipwrecked mariners for its Christmas appeal

This year seafarers in need will benefit from a Christmas card appeal.
The mayor and mayoress of Chichester, John and Cherry Hughes helped launch the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society appeal in North Pallant last month.

Profits for the sale of Christmas cards will go directly to help those who have suffered the consequences of shipwreck, have spent their lives at sea and now face financial hardship in their retirement or as a result of an accident or ill health.

Commodore Malcolm Williams, the Societies chief executive said: “We were delighted the mayor and mayoress of Chichester were able to launch our annual Christmas card appeal.
“This appeal is the charity’s major national fundraising campaign and the support we receive from people both locally and across the country enables us to continue helping those from the seafaring community who are desperately in need. “All cards purchased and donations received will make a vital contribution towards our often life-changing work.”

Chichester University announces honorary graduates.

Chichester University has honoured the following people in its autumn graduation ceremony.

Julie Hesmondhalgh, the star of Coronation Street who portrayed Hayley Cropper, will receive an honorary master of arts.  She left the soap earlier this year after a run of 16 years.  Julie has raised tens of thousands of pounds for various charities including the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, which raises awareness of bullying, and Maundy Relief, which aims to relieve poverty.

The former children’s laureate and author of War Horse Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare, a tutor, will each receive an honorary fellowship for their contributions to literature and education respectively.

England and Team GB hockey international Alex Danson, opera singer Jonathan Veira and radio dramatist Nick Warberton will also become honorary graduates.
